FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A witness is grateful to be alive after multiple shots were fired, injuring two people in central Fresno's Tower District early Sunday morning.
"That bullet could have hit me," said Nathan Boone. "I could have been done."
Fresno Police say a man is recovering at Community Regional Medical Center from a gunshot wound. He is in stable condition.
The department says a woman was also injured after possibly being trampled, but the exact cause of her injury is still under investigation.
Boone says he was with friends at MIA Nightclub when the shooting happened.
He says he saw a black van drive by just before hearing the gunshots.
Fresno Police officers were already in the area in anticipation of a large turnout due to Memorial Day weekend.
Witnesses say the crowds added to the chaos.
"Everyone starts ducking, screaming and running, you know? Some people were like, kind of crying and just panicking," Boone said.
After the scene was secure, Boone says his friends saw a man lying on the ground outside, screaming for help.
Police say after hearing the gunshots, officers ran towards them and found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
The department says officers saw a vehicle speed away and followed it, not knowing whether the people inside were involved in the shooting.
They say someone threw a gun out of the vehicle, which was recovered by police.
After a helicopter followed the vehicle, police located and detained three people.
At this time police, say it's unknown whether those detained are responsible for the shooting.
After hundreds of people were out at the bars at the time of the shooting, witnesses say they're glad it wasn't worse and that they'll be more careful going forward.
